On 16 February 2024, a Palestinian gunman armed with a handgun opened fire at Israelis waiting at a bus station in Re'em Junction, Highway 40, killing two and injuring four others. The gunman was shot and killed by a bystander who was in his car during the attack.

Shooting[edit]

Shortly after 12:30 pm, the shooter arrived at a bus station in Re'em Junction on Highway 40, near Kiryat Malakhi, in a stolen vehicle. He then opened fire at civilians waiting at the bus stop with a handgun.[1][2] Six people were shot. The Kaplan Hospital announced that two of the victims were declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. One person died at the scene while another was in serious condition and died at the hospital.[3] The Magen David Adom emergency service said that two of the injured were in serious condition, and the other two were in moderate condition.[4]

An Israeli civilian who was driving near the scene heard gunshots, and stopped at a gas station. He then loaded his gun and fatally shot the attacker.[2] An eyewitness said they saw him open fire on the shooter about a minute and a half after the attack began.[5]

Perpetrator[edit]

Haaretz identified the shooter as a Palestinian from East Jerusalem.[6] Investigations found that he was from Shuafat with Israeli residency. He was later identified as 37-year-old Fadi Jamjoun.[1]

A large number of police officers conducted searches at the attack scene to confirm that nobody else was involved, but law enforcement officials concluded that Jamjoun likely acted alone.[1]

Clashes broke out in Shuafat between Israel Police forces and residents as they were reportedly heading for Jamjoun's house.[7]

Reactions[edit]

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the victims. He said the attacked showed that "the entire country was a front and that the murderers, who come not only from Gaza, want to kill us all."[8][9]

US Ambassador to Israel Jack Lew said he was appalled by the attack and offered condolences to the families affected.[10]

Hamas praised the attack and said it was a natural response to Israel's war in Gaza, and called for more Palestinians to take up arms.[9]

Fatah welcomed the attack, calling it a "heroic operation" and saying that it came as a "natural framework for the crimes committed by the occupation" in Palestine.[10]

Palestinian Islamic Jihad said the attack was a response to Israel's war in Gaza.[2]

The Palestinian Mujahideen Brigades boasted the attacks.[11]
