Kharp (Russian: Харп, Nenets: Харп, lit. 'aurora') is an urban locality (an urban-type settlement) in the Priuralsky District of Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Russia, on the bank of the Sob River near the Polar Urals. Population: 6,413 (2010 Census);[1] 7,278 (2002 Census);[4] 5,381 (1989 Census).[5]
The nearest major settlement is Salekhard, roughly 45 kilometres (28 miles) away.
The town was built by Gulag prisoners during the Stalin era.[6][7]
Kharp is the location of penal colonies IK-18 Polar Owl and IK-3 Polar Wolf,[8] one of Russia’s northernmost prisons.[7]
On 16 February 2024, Alexei Navalny died in Kharp, while serving his politically motivated sentence.
